I would think to get a more even skin color, to do your makeup last. Like put on your foundation allover your face, not just on the wound area. It seems like it would make more sense to me.

As usual, I didn't end up getting a costume, but at the last minute I was inspired by this zombie look & utilizing an old nurse uniform cutting certain areas & burning it along with this similar look had a costume for Halloween.
